Lesson 8
Responsibility
Rights go with responsibilities. Just as our status gives us certain rights, so it also gives us certain responsibilities. Responsibility refers to the things we have to do as human beings. We become bad or irresponsible when we fail to carry out our responsibilities. Everybody has responsibilities in the home and at school.
The Responsibilities of Fathers
A father is the head of his family, so he has many responsibilities in the home. A father provides shelter for the entire family. He is to give mother money for food, pay school fees and discipline children when they do the wrong thing. A father is supposed to provide for clothing, security of the home as well as payment of bills.
The Responsibilities of Mothers
A mother is the main caretaker of the home. She cooks for the family, bathes children and take care of children when they are sick. She teaches children how to grow up to be responsible adults in future.
It is true that fathers give mothers house keeping money, mothers can also help to pay our school fees as well as provide for other needs. In the same way fathers also, help our mothers to maintain the home. This, they do by sometimes bathing babies when mothers are busy in the kitchen. They even go to the extend of doing cooking themselves. Have you ever seen you father cooking before?
The Responsibilities of Children
There is nothing like a boy’s job and a girl’s job. This is because in a home where there are only girls, they do what we assume to be boy’s job. For instance, girls can fetch water, sweep rooms and dust tables and chairs. In the same way the absence of girls leaves boys to do what is assumes to be girl’s job, that is sweeping the compound, cooking and washing dishes.
This is because it is the responsibility of children to do the household chores. Besides that, children are to help parents by going on errands as well as performing school duties.
At school, boys and girls are to keep the compound clean and healthy. Staying in an unclean environment to learn will make you fall sick. Children must always do their home work and do it well. There is time for everything.
Do not waste your time on unnecessary things. You are not supposed to be playing while your homework is not yet done. It is when all these things are done correctly, that one can say he has carried out his responsibility. God blesses those who are responsible.
The Complementary Role of Mothers and Fathers
It is true that fathers and mothers have different roles to play in the home, but sometimes, they go out of the way by helping each other. It is true that it is fathers who give money but sometimes mothers also contribute. For instance, mothers sometimes add a little money to what fathers give to them.
